Completed my undergraduate research project aiming to identify rice lines that display resistance to a new ecotype of the plant parasite Striga asiatica. This research will help to locate new resistance genes that can be pyramided into the rice host for maximal protection against the parasite.
Completed a 6 week placement at the University of Sheffield in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences. I worked with a PhD student on a project to identify and characterise the toolkit genes involved in stomatal development in the early land plant Physcomitrella patens, using information on the toolkit genes identified in the flowering plant Arabidopsis thaliana.
Joined a 1 week field course at the Danum Valley Field Centre in Borneo, Malaysia, where I completed a short project measuring herbivore defence levels in dipterocarp seedlings in the tropical rainforest in gaps and the understorey.
Volunteered for 4 weeks in the Pelepponnese with the NGO Archelon. My work focussed on protecting nesting loggerhead turtles, collecting data on their nesting patterns to monitor their behaviour, and raising awareness about their conservation status.
