For my Master's project I worked in the Grant Ritchie Group (PTCL, Oxford) developing a laser-based system for sensitive trace gas detection on the ppb level. The rationale behind such work was to employ a system for the detection of acetonitrile as a biomarker for cystic fibrosis. Much research had been done on the link between hydrogen cyanide levels and cystic fibrosis, so the logical step was to consider the next molecule in such homologous series. Over the course of the year I was fortunate to involve several different laser systems, including a supercontinuum-based one and diode lasers.
